Home > Photos > Australian Safari: Fraser Island

These pictures were snapped on July 19th during a day tour of Fraser Island, the world's largest all-sand island, just off the coast of Queensland. The island contains absolutely no soil, no clay and just a few small rocky outcrops which are scattered about it's coastline periphery.

Fraser Landing+

We arrived on Fraser Island to this view via a ferry from Hervey Bay. You can either bring your own 4WD, rent one on the island, or take a guided tour, like we ended up doing.

Tour Bus+

Here's what our 4WD tour bus looked like. We got lucky - only five people, us included, had signed up for the tour so it was almost like we had a personal guide for the day.

All Aboard!+

After driving an hour along sand roads jutting through, across and over the island, we reached the eastern side's '70 Mile Beach'. There we boarded this six-seater Sesna to check out the island from above.

Aerial Coast+

The views from the plane were kick ass! This photo doesn't show it, but we also saw a humpback whale and its calf just north of where I shot this. Humpback's make their way into Hervey Bay from Antarctica every winter to give birth.

Aerial Lake+

Fraser Island has several large, freshwater lakes. Can you believe all of this vegetation is growing in sand?

Maheno Shipwreck+

Blown on the shore by a typhoon while being towed to Japan, the S.S. Minnow, er, Maheno shipwreck has rested on Fraser Island since 1935.

Dingo+

Fraser Island's dingo are a purebred species, unlike those found on the mainland. They are much like coyotes in the states, a cross between a dog and a wolf. They hunt small animals, raid garbage cans and tents and have been known to attack small children. Scary!
